Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has reiterated his annoyance at being deployed out of position by Andre Villas-Boas.
The Belgium international, who has been filling in for the injured Danny Rose in Spurs’ recent fixtures, has urged his manager to delve into the transfer market to find a someone who is more suited to the position on a permanent basis, so he can resume his role at the heart of the defence.
“We have had some injuries on the left of defence at Tottenham this season, and it has often been down to me to fill the gap,” Vertonghen told the Daily Mail.
“Tottenham pay my wages, so I have to accept it, but it doesn’t suit me, and the club know how much I want to play centre-half.
“I think I have done enough to deserve a place there now, ideally for every game.”
While Vertonghen accepts he must fill in wherever he is asked to, he curses his own versatility which invites the Villas-Boas to use him to fill gaps at left-back and central midfield.
“I can play at left-back and I can help the team at times. But everyone knows that I am not a left-back. Once there are injuries, I’m the first option to fill the gap,” the former Ajax defender continued.
“It sometimes feel like I’m a stopgap. Sometimes it is better that you can play in only one position. You can see that with other players. These guys specialise in one position and can completely concentrate on playing there.”
