La Seleccion is one of the hot favourites to go all the way at the World Cup in Brazil next year. The side is packed with talent, especially from the midfield forward, and has shown generally superb form since Alejandro Sabella took over coaching duties in 2011.
Much of this excellent run has been down to the blistering attacking play of the world's best footballer, Lionel Messi, who has taken over the captaincy and spiritual leadership of the group.
When Messi is missing, the team looks a different proposition. Though still brimming with world class players, without 'La Pulga' there is not the same spark. Even the self belief among the players seems to diminish without their go-to man.
So what if the unthinkable happens, and Argentina loses Messi to injury just before, or during, the 2014 World Cup? Though the prospect of such a scenario might horrify Albiceleste fans, it is not impossible, or even that improbable, considering the niggling injuries the Barcelona star has begun to pick up recently.
Let's look at a few of the players who could be called upon by Sabella should he be left without his captain.
Ezequiel Lavezzi
Already used regularly by Sabella as a super-sub, Lavezzi would bring explosive pace and busy movement to the side. He lacks the ability to put his foot on the ball and dictate play, however, as Messi can do if required. He is also wasteful in front of goal at times and can not be counted on to be a consistent match winner, though he is capable of moments of brilliance.Javier Pastore
The elegant PSG playmaker is more like a traditional Argentinian number 10, so his presence would require some tactical adjustments, but nothing the rest of the team would be unfamiliar with. In all likelihood, Pastore would make a good addition to the team in the absence of Messi, but he would have to be at the peak of his form ahead of the tournament for Sabella to entrust him in such a crucial role.Erik Lamela
Perhaps the best choice of all. Lamela is quick, an excellent dribbler, a great passer and he has plenty of flair. The ex River man is also confident enough in his own abilities to be able to take on the burden of replacing Messi.Mauro Icardi
Called into the squad by Sabella for Argentina's final two World Cup qualifiers in place of La Pulga, Icardi is very similar in style to the Argentinian captain and is bursting with potential. He may be a little too raw to take on such an important task at the Big Show, however.Ricky Alvarez
The Inter player appears to be hitting top form this season, and could easily make Sabella's squad for Brazil. He is dynamic and unpredictable enough to trouble most defences, though whether he can be trusted to perform in clutch situations is still in doubt.Ever Banega
Sabella could elect to split playmaking/defensive midfield duties between Ever Banega and Fernando Gago, with two strikers up front. This could see Argentina improve as a defensive unit, but the creative threat of the attack might be dulled.culled from Argentina football world
